What does it mean to make folk music from the future? Musician Joyce Kwon discusses reaching back and being present in the future through Jungian thought and native slipstream. She looks at the moon through Korean and Brazilian songs and through the wisdom of the Munduruku. She gushes about Iemanjá, explains why she prefers to call j*zz (mer)folk music, and adopts an other-than-human identity of the cyborg as an Asian American woman. Drawing from a joyful, syncretic faith, Joyce shares art-making as prayer.

About the artist

Joyce Kwon is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter & gayageum player making folk music from the future. Her practice has been built on a series of discipleships under culture bearers and supported by the California Arts Council, Alliance for California Traditional Arts, and UC Berkeley.
